In another sign that the New York Giants are still dealing with distractions related to Plaxico Burress even after cutting the wide receiver, a report out Monday says that linebacker Antonio Pierce wasn't the only member of the organization who testified before the grand jury investigating Burress.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that Giants employees Jessie Armstead, Charles Way and Ronnie Barnes all appeared before the grand jury, apparently because all three were involved in the team's handling of the incident when Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg at a New York City nightclub. Armstead is a special assistant to the coaching staff and a former Giants linebacker, Way is the Giants' director of player development and a former Giants fullback and Barnes is the Giants' vice president of medical services.
Vacchiano writes that Way, Barnes and Armstead could help establish a timeline of what happened on the night in November when Burress shot himself, including whether anyone other than Burress possessed the gun. Prosecutors have indicated that Pierce could be facing criminal charges for possessing the gun after Burress shot himself. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk writes that Way, Barnes and Armstead were likely asked to tell the grand jury what Burress and Pierce told them about the night in question.
The bottom line in all this is that when the Giants cut Burress early this offseason, they hoped they had eliminated the distractions surrounding him -- but now it's clear that they haven't. Burress is currently an unrestricted free agent who can sign with any team, but the other 31 NFL teams must be looking at the situation facing the Giants and wondering if doing business with Burress is worth the hassle.
